February 2008
No snow but plenty of water!

Several springs are now up and running well, including one which runs down the lane - it makes for a muddy walk to School! Some of the ditches have become partially blocked causing them to overflow onto the road - we hired a digger and managed to get it all flowing again. What was disapointing was the quantity of rubbish that was dug out - I shall have to have a litter picking session sometime.

Despite bitter winds we have avoided the snow which has affected so much of the country - so far!

Weekend off
Cameron foolishly managed to have a weekend off last weekend, this coincided with a project to renovate the village Schools nature area. A request for an hours help with some chain-sawing turned in to a weekend of hard-labour! However, he worked no harder than any of the rest of the parent volunteers and it was a great community effort. It was lots of fun and the finished result looks wonderful. Fortunately the weather was mild and dry. Happiness was complete for Alasdair when a toad and a newt were found sheltering under some stones. Despite already having a pond in the garden Alasdair was inspired to dig an additional mini pond - goodbye vegetable plot!

5th February
Today we have the double excitement of an Environment Agency inspection and Pancake day - I know which I prefer!

22nd February
Stand by Your Ham Recording
Yesturday 'Pig Aid' was launched to try to raise awareness of the plight of the pig industry caused by the feed crisis. About 30 pig farmers from around the country, including Muriel, converged on a recording studio in London to record that well known Country and Western song 'Stand by your Ham'! This is a fun way of making a serious point and has certainly attracted a lot of media interest. We have had visits to the farm from the Western Daily Press, BBC Politics Show and ITV West, also radio interviews for Radio Somerset. We have sung to the pigs for the benefit of several photographers and Muriel even sang down the phone for Radio Somerset whilst on a train in Reading station - very embarrassing! If you want to hear us singing the songs should be available as a free download on the campaign website www.pigsareworthit.com I hope later today, a video should be out next week. It's been a strange few days - back to the real work now though.
