November 2008 Here comes the cold and the Danes! Early frosts and bitter north winds have already stripped many of the trees of their lovely autumn colours. November feels pretty bleak already. Like most people we're trying not to put much heating on to economise - hot water bottles and extra jumpers. Our old farm-house is heated by storage heaters which seem to produce heat at the wrong time and are very expensive. We have a couple of open fires but these aren't very efficient so I have been trying to research sustainable heating systems such as wood-chip boilers. I am finding it quite hard to find clear information as to which are the most economical solutions. I'd love to be able to grow the fuel we need on the farm - it ought to be possible but I fear the capital outlay may be too great. Today (4th November) we have a visit from 50 Danish agricultural students - last year 30 came for a look round. There isn't much outdoor pig production in Europe so they find our extensive system quite a novelty. 4th November 2008 - Farewell Francine We lost our oldest chicken this week - she was a beautiful Columbian Bantam and the first of the bantams we bought when the children were small. She has reared many broods of chicks and most of our remaining tiny flock derive from her. She was a grand old age of seven and a half. I think on average a chicken usually live 5 to 10 years although some bantams can live beyond ten. I think she reached a pretty good age though. Perhaps next year we'll have to rear a few more birds to build up our flock again. None of my hens have laid for about two months - I don't like buying eggs they are never as good as our own. |
